Retainers – How Long Should You Wear Them?
How Long Should You Wear Retainers?
Completing orthodontic treatment is an exciting milestone, but it does not mean your teeth are finished moving. After braces or Invisalign, teeth naturally try to shift back toward their original positions. Retainers are the key to protecting the results you worked so hard to achieve.
At Pal Orthodontics of La Jolla, patients are guided on how to maintain their new smiles for years to come.
Why Retainers Are So Important
Once orthodontic treatment ends, the bone and tissues around the teeth need time to stabilize. Retainers hold teeth in their corrected positions while this healing process occurs. Without them, small movements can gradually turn into noticeable crowding or bite changes.
Wearing retainers is the final and most important phase of orthodontic treatment.
Types of Retainers
Some patients use removable clear retainers, while others benefit from a fixed retainer bonded behind the teeth. Each type serves the same purpose: maintaining alignment and protecting the bite.
Dr. Pal recommends the type of retainer based on each patient’s needs and lifestyle.
How Long Is Long Enough?
Most patients wear retainers full-time for the first 6 months, (only removing to eat or drink) and then transition to nighttime wear. Wearing retainers nightly for life is often advised to keep teeth stable as the body naturally changes with age. Children wearing retainers after Phase I treatment will often wear them until all of their adult teeth have erupted, and they are ready for Phase II in treatment.
Protecting Your Smile for Life
Regular retainer use, proper cleaning, and replacing worn retainers when needed ensures your orthodontic investment lasts. This simple habit can prevent the need for future retreatment.
