What to Do If Your Braces Break

What to Do If Your Braces Break?

Orthodontic emergencies can occasionally occur during treatment, whether due to normal daily activities, dietary choices, or accidental impact. A loose bracket or a poking wire can be uncomfortable and sometimes concerning; however, in most cases, these issues are minor and can be temporarily managed at home until you are able to be seen in the office.

At Pal Orthodontics of La Jolla, we want our patients to feel informed and confident in handling these situations. With a few simple steps, you can stay comfortable and keep your treatment on track until we see you in the office.

Common Types of Orthodontic Issues

When something doesn’t feel quite right with your braces, it’s often related to a few common issues. Patients most frequently experience loose or broken brackets, protruding wires, or irritation caused by shifting components.

Identifying the specific issue is important, as each situation may require a slightly different approach to keep you comfortable and prevent further disruption until your visit.

What to Do About a Loose/Broken Bracket?

A loose bracket may remain attached to the wire or move freely along it, depending on how it has detached, or it may no longer be attached to the tooth at all, indicating that it has fully broken off. While this can feel unusual, it’s important to avoid touching or playing with the bracket, as this may cause further movement or irritation.

In the meantime, try to stick to softer foods and avoid anything hard, sticky, or crunchy until the bracket can be properly repaired in the office.

How to Handle a Poking Wire?

If a wire begins to irritate the cheek or gums, applying orthodontic wax can provide quick and effective relief by covering the sharp area. In some situations, a clean nail clipper may be used carefully to trim a small portion of the wire if it is easily accessible.

If the irritation persists or you are unable to manage it comfortably, it’s important to schedule an appointment so the issue can be addressed properly.

Managing Irritation from Braces

Mild irritation of the cheeks, lips, or gums can sometimes occur as your braces shift and adjust throughout treatment. This is a normal part of the process, especially after adjustments.

Keeping the area clean and avoiding foods that may aggravate sensitive spots can help minimize discomfort. Rinsing with warm salt water may also help soothe irritation and support healing.

If the irritation becomes more severe or does not improve, it’s best to contact the office for further guidance.
