What Is a Crossbite?
Crossbite
A crossbite is a type of bite misalignment where the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, rather than slightly overlapping them as they should in a balanced bite. This can affect the front teeth, the back teeth, or both, depending on how the teeth and jaws develop over time.
While it may seem like a minor issue at first, a crossbite often reflects an underlying imbalance in jaw growth. At Pal Orthodontics of La Jolla, we frequently identify crossbites during early evaluations, where timing plays a key role. Addressing the issue early allows for more natural correction and helps support proper development as a child grows.
What Causes a Crossbite?
Crossbites can develop for several reasons, often as a result of how the teeth and jaws grow together over time. In many cases, genetics play a role, especially when there is a mismatch between the width of the upper and lower jaws. A narrow upper jaw is one of the most common causes, particularly in growing children. Other contributing factors may include delayed or irregular tooth eruption, prolonged habits such as thumb-sucking, or airway-related patterns like mouth breathing, which can influence how the jaws develop.
Because the upper and lower jaws do not always grow at the same rate, even small imbalances early on can gradually lead to a more noticeable crossbite if left unaddressed.
Why Crossbites Should Be Treated Early
Crossbites rarely resolve on their own and often become more pronounced over time. As a child grows, the bite may adapt by shifting the jaw into a more comfortable position, which can lead to asymmetrical development. This functional shift, if left uncorrected, may contribute to uneven jaw growth, facial imbalance, and excessive wear on certain teeth.
Addressing a crossbite early allows orthodontists to guide jaw development while growth is still occurring, often resulting in a more efficient, stable, and less complex treatment process.
How a Crossbite Affects Jaw Growth and Teeth
A crossbite doesn’t just affect the appearance of the teeth, it can influence how the entire jaw develops over time. When the bite is not properly aligned, the muscles and joints of the jaw may begin to compensate, which can create imbalance and place uneven pressure on certain areas.
Over time, this may lead to:
Uneven tooth wear, as certain teeth absorb more force than others
Gum recession in localized areas, due to excessive pressure on specific teeth
Jaw discomfort or tension, especially during chewing or speaking
Asymmetrical facial development, caused by uneven jaw growth
Correcting a crossbite early helps restore proper balance, allowing the teeth and jaws to function more harmoniously and develop in a more natural, stable way.
How Orthodontic Treatment Can Correct a Crossbite
Treatment for a crossbite depends on the patient’s age, the severity of the condition, and how the jaws are developing. Because timing plays an important role, the approach is always carefully tailored to each individual.
In younger patients, expanding the upper jaw is often the most effective solution. Appliances such as palate expander can gently widen the jaw, creating the proper relationship between the upper and lower teeth while growth is still ongoing.
For older patients, treatment may focus more on repositioning the teeth using braces or Invisalign clear aligners. These approaches are designed to improve alignment and restore a balanced bite in a precise and controlled way.
The key to successful treatment is choosing the right approach at the right time, allowing for results that are both effective and long-lasting.
When Should a Child Be Evaluated?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, enough permanent teeth have developed to identify potential concerns, even if they are not yet visible. Early evaluation does not always mean immediate treatment. In many cases, it simply allows the orthodontist to monitor growth and determine the ideal timing for intervention if needed.
Identifying issues like crossbites early gives us the opportunity to guide jaw development more effectively and help prevent more complex problems in the future.
